ABOUT MATTIE

I am a communications consultant, former reporter, and lifelong writer and observer. I write Sea Legs, a Substack on policy, community, culture, and the external forces that make up our world.

Most recently, I was a director at a health communications firm where I provided strategic counsel on healthcare access and developed and executed thought leadership strategies for high-ranking healthcare executives. During the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, I was the public relations director of the Association of State and Territorial Health Officials.

Before that, I was a health and human services policy reporter and have bylines in Politico, Bloomberg, SELF, National Geographic, Health Affairs, and more.

I hold a master’s in journalism from Northwestern’s Medill School of Journalism and received my undergraduate degree from the University of Arkansas (Go Hogs!)

I’m based in Brooklyn, NY—by way of Arkansas, Chicago, and D.C.—with my husband, toddler, cat, and a few plants that my husband is keeping alive (sort of).
